Abstract: Because of their numerous desirable characteristics, including high yield strength, minimal sensitivity to contaminants, a wide working temperature range, and quick response, magnetorheological (MR) fluids have been widely used in a variety of applications in many different industries. Constitutive modelling is an excellent technique for describing the rheological characteristics of MR fluids, which is important for the design and improvement of MR devices. For MR fluids, numerous constitutive models have been put forth during the last few decades. In addition to a brief discussion of the components and rheological characteristics of MR fluids, this article aims to provide an overview of the constitutive models of MR fluids and the applications of these models in the modelling of MR devices, including quasi-static modelling, dynamic modelling, and finite-element modelling.
